What is FSC? 丨 Detailed Explanation and Usage of the FSC Label

01 What is FSC?

In the early 1990s, as global forest issues became increasingly prominent, with a decrease in forest area and a decline in forest resources in terms of quantity (area) and quality (ecosystem diversity), some consumers refused to purchase wood products without proof of legal origin. Until 1993, the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) was officially established as an independent, non-profit non-governmental organization aimed at promoting environmentally appropriate, socially beneficial, and economically viable forest management worldwide.

Carrying the FSC trademark helps consumers and purchasers identify products that have obtained FSC certification. The FSC trademark printed on a product signifies that the raw materials for that product come from responsibly managed forests or support the development of responsible forestry.

Currently, FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) has become one of the most widely used forest certification systems globally. Its certification types include Forest Management (FM) certification for sustainable forest management and Chain of Custody (COC) certification for the supervision and certification of the production and sales chain of forest products. FSC certification is applicable to both timber and non-timber products from all FSC-certified forests, suitable for forest owners and managers. #FSC Forest Certification#

02 What are the types of FSC labels?

The FSC labels are mainly classified into 3 types:

FSC 100%
All materials used come from FSC-certified forests that are managed responsibly. The label text reads: "From well-managed forests."

FSC Mixed (FSC MIX)
The product is made from a mix of FSC-certified forest materials, recycled materials, and/or FSC controlled wood. The label text reads: "From responsible sources."

FSC Recycled (RECYCLED)
The product is made from 100% recycled materials. The label text reads: "Made from recycled material."

When using FSC labels on products, brands can download the labels from the FSC official website, select the correct label based on the product, create the artwork according to the usage specifications, and then send an email application for approval.

03 How to use the FSC label?

1. Requirements for a product label element:

2. Requirements for size and format of FSC label on labeled products

3. Color matching requirements for FSC product labels

4. Improper Use of the FSC Trademark

(a) Change the design scale.

(b) Changes or additions beyond the normal design elements.

(c) To have the FSC logo appear in other information unrelated to FSC certification, such as environmental statements.

(d) Use non-specified colors.

(e) Change the shape of the border or background.

(f) The FSC logo is tilted or rotated, and the text is not synchronized.

(g) Failure to leave the required space around the perimeter.

(h) Incorporating the FSC trademark or design into other brand designs, leading to the misconception of brand association.

(i) The placement of logos, labels, or trademarks on a patterned background, resulting in poor legibility.

(j) Placing the logo on a photo or pattern background that may mislead the certification.

(k) Separate the elements of the "Forest For All Forever" and "Forest and Coexistence" trademarks and use them separately

04 How to use FSC label for promotion outside the product?

FSC provides the following two types of promotional labels for certified brands, which can be used in product catalogs, websites, brochures, and other promotional materials.

Note: Do not place the FSC trademark directly on the background of a photo or a complex pattern to avoid affecting the design of the trademark or misleading readers in content.

05 How to distinguish the authenticity of FSC label?

Nowadays, many products are labeled with FSC, but it's hard to distinguish between the real and fake ones. How can we know if a product with FSC label is real?

First of all, it is important to know that all products using FSC label certification can be verified by tracing the source. So how to trace the source?

On the FSC label of the product, there is a trademark license number. Using the trademark license number, one can easily find the certificate holder and related information on the official website, and also directly search for related companies.
